AIHR Certificate Program Requirements: Eligibility, Exams, and What It Takes To Earn Your Certificate

There are no AIHR Certificate Program requirements to meet before you enroll, whether you're just moving into HR or have years of experience behind you.

When you’re looking into the AIHR Certificate Program requirements, a few more questions tend to follow: what you need to do to earn the certificate, how much time a program takes, and how to pick one that matches where you are in your career. Knowing the answers upfront helps you choose a program you’ll actually finish, and plan your time around it from the start.

Who is eligible for AIHR Certificate Programs?

Anyone can enroll in an AIHR Certificate Program. AIHR has no formal entry requirements, which means you don’t need a degree, a minimum number of years in HR, an HR job title, or a prior certification. You also won’t have to submit an application and wait for approval before you start.

This makes AIHR HR training much more accessible to anyone interested in upskilling themselves in HR. For example, you might be an office manager who picked up HR duties as your company grew, an HR Coordinator a year or two into your career, or an experienced HR Business Partner who wants to build a specialism in people analytics.

While you can enroll in any of AIHR’s programs, it’s worth downloading the syllabus of any program you’re considering to check whether it matches what you already know and what you want to learn next. Each program page lets you download the full curriculum as a PDF.

What you need to earn the AIHR certificate

While anyone can enroll, earning the AIHR certificate does come with one requirement: passing the program’s final exam, which you take after working through the lessons and assignments.

The exam and the 70% pass mark

The final exam for each AIHR Certificate Program is multiple choice and tests your knowledge of the key concepts covered in the program. You need a score of at least 70% to pass.

Once you pass, you can claim your digital certificate. Every certificate carries a unique identification code and can be validated at any time through a secure link. It’s emailed to the address on your learning account, usually within 24 hours.

What happens if you don’t pass the first time

You can retake the exam as many times as you need. The only condition is timing: you have to pass within your 12-month access period.

A failed attempt still gives you useful information, though. Look at the questions you found hardest, go back to the modules that cover them, and retake the exam once you’ve revisited those topics.

We’d also suggest you schedule your first attempt well before your access period ends, since leaving it to the final weeks puts pressure on every retake.

What to plan for beyond the formal requirements

None of the following is a formal requirement, but they will help you understand the time and effort required when completing a certificate program:

  • Study time: AIHR Certificate Programs typically take about 25-45 hours to complete. Let’s say your chosen program is 35 hours. If you set aside three hours a week, you’d finish in roughly 12 weeks, and at one hour a week, you’d still finish within your access period, though with less room for retakes.
  • The 12-month access window: Your access period is also your due date for passing the exam, so it’s worth planning your study schedule around it from day one.
  • The online, self-paced format: AIHR Certificate Programs are fully online and self-paced, so there are no fixed class times or exam dates to work around. Nobody sets the pace for you, so you’ll need to set it yourself, for example, with a regular weekly study slot.
  • Enrollment timing: Standalone certificate programs open for enrollment in set windows. The Full Academy Access license is available to purchase at any time and offers immediate access to all certificate programs, a comprehensive Resource Library, the AIHR community, live events, and much more.

How to choose the right program when there are no entry requirements

With no limiting eligibility requirements, how do you choose which certificate program is best-suited for you?

A couple of questions can help here: What problem do you most need to solve in your current role? Where do you want to be in two years? And which skills does that next role ask for that you don’t use yet?

Your answers usually point you toward one of three directions:

  • Building your foundations: If you’re new to HR or handle HR as part of a broader role, start with a program that covers core HR practice broadly before you specialize. The HR Coordinator or the HR Generalist Certificate Program is a great choice here.
  • Upskilling a specific HR domain: If you already have a solid HR base, a program in a specific domain, such as People Analytics or Organizational Development Certificate Program, helps you build depth in the area your team relies on you for.
  • Moving into a strategic role: If you’re working toward a business partner or advisory position, AIHR’s programs in HR Business Partnering, HR Consulting, or AI & HR Transformation focus on aligning HR work with business goals.

How AIHR Certificate Programs compare to HR certifications

If you’re comparing options, you’ll notice that SHRM and HRCI certifications work differently. These are exam-based credentials, and eligibility is checked when you apply. A professional body’s certification validates the HR knowledge you already have, whereas a certificate program focuses on building new, practical skills in a specific HR domain.

Here’s how the eligibility requirements compare:

Credential or program

Designed for

Eligibility to apply

How to earn it

AIHR Certificate Programs

HR professionals at any career stage building modern skills across HR domains

None

Pass the final certificate program exam with 70% or higher

SHRM-CP

HR professionals in operational roles, students, and people entering HR
No degree or previous HR experience required; basic working knowledge of HR recommended
Pass the SHRM-CP exam

SHRM-SCP

HR professionals in strategic roles
At least 3 years of strategic-level HR work, or holding the SHRM-CP for at least 3 years
Pass the SHRM-SCP exam

aPHR (HRCI)

People starting in HR or managing people without HR training
No HR experience required
Pass the aPHR exam

PHR (HRCI)

HR professionals in operational roles (U.S. law focus)
1 year of professional HR experience with a master’s degree, 2 years with a bachelor’s, or 4 years without a degree
Pass the PHR exam

SPHR (HRCI)

Strategic HR leaders
4 years of professional HR experience with a master’s degree, 5 years with a bachelor’s, or 7 years without a degree
Pass the SPHR exam

Some HR certifications are also open to newcomers, so experience is only part of the difference. Timing and structure matter too. SHRM exams run in two testing windows a year, and you need to apply within the period that matches your window, while SHRM credential holders recertify every three years by earning 60 professional development credits or retaking the exam.

You can pursue an AIHR Certificate Program on its own to build skills in a specific area, or alongside a credential. AIHR is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP recertification activities, and AIHR is a recertification provider with other global HR associations, like HRCI. So if you already hold a credential, a certificate program can count toward keeping it current.

Your next step

Since there are no AIHR certificate program requirements to meet before you enroll, the only real decision is which program fits your goals. Download the syllabus of the program you’re leaning toward, block a regular weekly study slot, and set a target date for your first exam attempt well within your 12 months of access. That way, you have time to retake it if you need to.
